Day3

Day 3 of Gen Con 2015 is in the books and what a crazy day it was!

Today was my day to fully indulge my competitive side at Gen Con. As two of the adventurers from our intrepid band had to return to Chicago to attend two weddings, I was able to take part in two competitions sponsored by Wyrd Miniatures and an airbrushing class without feeling like I was ditching my friends.

The first of the events sponsored by Wyrd Miniatures was a Malifaux tournament in the Henchman Hardcore format. This tourney ended up being a lot of fun, despite the fact that I didn’t really place all that well. I ended the tournament with a 1-2-1 record and a +4 VP differential; basically I tied my first two rounds, lost a close battle the third round, and then crushed my opponent 7-1 in the final round. This tourney as super fast pace and it seemed like everyone participating had a really good time with this casual tournament format.

In the afternoon I attended an airbrushing Q&A class tought by the master of the craft, Angel Giraldez. If you’re not familiar with his work, which is mostly miniatures for the game Infinity, Google him and your mind will be blown. It was really great to see someone so adept at using an airbrush in action; if I can manage to harness a quarter of the magic that showed up at the end of that airbrush I will be taking my painting to a whole other level.

While I didn’t get to actually do any painting myself in that class as it was primarily a Q&A and demonstration,  I did get to slap some paint onto a model during the Wyrd Miniatures speed painting contest. Going in, I knew that I would have 45 minutes to paint a Malifaux miniature, but I had no idea what the mini would be. I was pleasantly surprised when the miniature given to us to paint turned out to be the Canine Remains model that is only available in the McMorning crew box; I’ve been wanting this model for a while as it is the one sculpt of this model that doesn’t actually come in the box of just Canine Remains. Those 45 minutes of painting flew by faster than I thought possible, but in the end I somehow managed to harness my painting mojo and come in second place in my time slot! This means that I qualify to take part in the Wyrd Miniatures Speed Painting Championship tomorrow afternoon! Wish me luck!

The day wrapped up with a meetup of the A Wyrd Place Facebook group. Not a whole lot of people ended up showing up for this (I am assuming that day three of the Con might have everyone exhausted), but I did have a fun time playing the new game from Wyrd “When Darkness Comes Rattling.” This co-op game absolutely kicked our collective asses; Sean, who was leading us through the game, said that of the 32 demo games he had ran that day ours was the one where the game just decided to take a dump on us. That being said, we have an absolute blast failing to save the world.

So, with all of that lead up, here’s some photos of the day’s adventures:

There is one more day of Gen Con left and then my favorite time of the year comes to a close. It’s time to hit the last of the booths I’ve missed during my time on the exhibit floor and then fire up the engine on my paint brush for the Wyrd Miniatures Speed Painting Championship!

Come back tomorrow to see what happened on the final day of Gen Con!
