The wizened old fortune teller had seen that Hank would find a wealth of crystals in the mountains; at least she hadn’t swindled him out of that scrip, thought Hank bitterly as the ice closed in around him…

Wyrd Miniature’s Rotten Harvest Painting Contest is over, which means that I can finally show you all something that I have been dying to share with the world. The above photo was my entry in the Rotten Harvest Painting competition in the “A Hero’s Demise” category, which was the diorama category in this competition; my entry is titled “Cold Comfort”. The rules of the contest meant that I wasn’t allowed to share this anywhere or mention what my entry was until after voting in the contest had closed. Well, all of the votes are in, the winners announced, and I’m please to tell you that my piece received 1st place in its category!

While I have won best painted at multiple local tournaments and leagues for various games, I’m excited for this recognition as this is the best I have placed in a competition with this large of an audience and potential pool of entrants.

Now that I can finally share this, I can also show you a few work in progress shots of this diorama:

And here are a few angles and details of the finished diorama which I cropped down for the photo collage or that didn’t make it into my final submitted image:

I had a lot of fun putting this piece together and am really happy with how it came out. I have been toying with the idea of encasing a painted miniature inside of the acrylic I use in my ice basing, but hand’t had a good opportunity to use it in action; when I heard the theme for the diorama category I just knew I had to give it a go. Honestly, I was terrified that encasing the model in ice would completely destroy the paint job or just not look good at all, luckily it turned out better than I could have anticipated. I hope you all like it!
