An Iron Painter’s Quest 2016, Episode 6: Time For A Check-Up

After a brief respite from the painting insanity while the judges did their judging thing, it is time once again to take up my sword and shield (or in this case my brush and palette) to continue my quest to an Iron Painter! Round Two is upon us and with it come the head-to-head painting duels which make the Iron Painter competition so unique.

For those who missed it, the results of the first round of Wyrd’s Iron Painter competition were announced last Friday. This year the first round scores were used to distribute the competitors into three tiers– top 16 go to Gold, next 16 go to Silver, and everyone else goes to Bronze. While I am sad to say that I missed making the Silver tier by just two points, I’m pleased to say that my piece scored higher than any of my entries last year and that I came in 40th overall out of 154 entries. There is some very stiff competition this year and some phenomenal entries in round 1.

But it is now time to move forward: the Round 2 theme and match-ups have been announced! The theme for the second round is “Better Off (Un)Dead” and my opponent is Vahallan42nd. While I was coming up with ideas for what to do for my entry this round I checked out my opponent’s round 1 entry and I can say that this is going to be a close match-up, so I’ve got to bring my A-game.

With my competition sized up, I have decided to go with a piece a bit larger than my last round entry. The idea is to have Dr. Dufresne (who is an alternate sculpt of Dr. McMourning) and Dr. Grimwell in a lab “improving” their latest creation. I already have the highly esteemed staff of my hospital sitting in my hobby cabinet just for the prefect occasion, so that’s one huge part of my entry I don’t need to go pick up. The rest of the diorama will require me to build a custom autopsy/operating table, a suitable room for the good doctors to work in, and piece together a hapless patient/victim from the multi-part kit and custom sculpts.

Looks like it’s time for a check-up!

I’ll need to make rapid progress if I want this model to turn out the way I am envisioning it in my mind, so check back frequently to see my progress!
